Becoming a teacher in the state of Texas by completing an alternative teacher certificate is affordable, flexible and fully credited to help launch your dream job educating children and changing lives! ATC – East Houston offers certifications in 9 different programs including Supplemental certification and specializing in Elementary and Middle School Certifications.
ATC – East Houston is a Texas State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) approved educator preparation program that offer Non-traditional scheduling, A minimum of one year time-line, Evening classes and more.

Step One: What type of Certificate are you looking for?
Certifications Offered:
> Generalist EC-6
> Generalist 4-8
> Mathematics 4-8
> Science 4-8
> Mathematics/Science 4-8
> Special Education EC-12
Supplemental Certifications Offered:
> Bilingual Education Supplemental
> English as a Second Language (ESL) Supplemental
> Special Education Supplemental
Step Two: Do you pass the Admission Requirements?
> A completed Application
> Application fee – $75.00 (non-refundable)
> Official transcripts for all colleges and universities attended
> Proof of Bachelor’s Degree
> Three (3) confidential professional references (forms provided by ATC-East Houston)
> Written composition – “Why I Want to Become a Teacher”
> Resume
Evidence of required competency in Reading, Writing and Mathematics in at least one (1) of the following areas or a combination:
> Masters Degree or Higher or
> Graduate Record Exam (GRE) of 500 or higher in both Verbal and Quantitative or
> ACT composite score of 23 with a minimum of 20 in both reading and math or
> THEA (Texas Higher Education Assessment) with minimum scores
> Reading – 240 (Generalist 4-8 = 260)
> Writing – 220
> Mathematics – 240 (Generalist 4-8 = 250) and
> Two parts of Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Test with a minimum score of 42 on Subsets 2 -5 (to be administered by ATC-East Houston) and
> Candidates graduating from a university with a language of instruction other than English must also have passing scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Step Three: Have you reviewed associated fees & costs?

+ 1,000 Content Course *
+ 1,000 Pedagogy & Professional Development Course *
+ 3,000 Internship – 2 Semesters **
= $5,075 Total
TExES exam, finger printing, and certificate cost are
the responsibility of the candidate.

* Fees for Content and PPR courses are due at registration
(Payment plans are available)
** Internship fees may be payroll deducted through ISD
We accept checks, cash or 3 installment payment plan with fee of $12.00 per installment.
